There is a direct train from Swansea, and it is the obvious choice. Transport for Wales runs to Tenby in about an hour and a half, with eight stops, and the quickest runs take just under that. With 89 minutes for the fastest run and 94 for the typical one, which of the Swansea departures you take makes little difference to the time on board.
Direct departures from Swansea on the weekday timetable we checked were at 06:00, 07:59, 10:09, 12:06, 14:08, 16:03, 18:02 and 20:06. The gaps are all close to two hours, so choose the train first and fit the rest of the day around it. The 20:06 was the latest, reaching Tenby at about 21:40.
An early riser can take the 06:00, in Tenby by about 07:35. For a day out, the 07:59 puts you in Tenby at about half past nine and the 10:09 at about a quarter to twelve. The 12:06 arrives at about 13:40 and the 14:08 at about 15:40, so anything after midday leaves a much shorter afternoon at the Tenby end. Later on, the 16:03 gets in at about 17:35 and the 18:02 at about 19:35.
The only alternative that appeared was a 15:44 with a change at Carmarthen. It took close to two hours and reached Tenby at about the same time as the 16:03 direct, so it offers nothing the through train does not.
By car the trip is 53 miles via the A48 and takes about 1h15, roughly 20 minutes less than the train from Swansea. The rail journey has the advantage of running straight through, with no change between Swansea and Tenby, whichever of the eight departures you pick.
Ten minutes’ walk takes you from Tenby station to Tudor Square, a distance of about 650 metres.
