From London, take GWR from London Paddington as far as Neath, two and a half hours with eight stops, and change there for Transport for Wales’s Pembroke Dock train, a little under two hours to Tenby with 12 stops. The typical journey allows just under half an hour at Neath for the change and takes just under five hours in all. That margin at Neath is enough for a modest delay on the GWR leg without losing the Transport for Wales connection.
On the weekday we checked, six Paddington departures made this connection: 05:23, 08:48, 10:48, 12:48, 16:18 and 16:48. The 05:23 reaches Tenby at about 10:15, the 08:48 at about 13:40, the 10:48 at about 15:40 and the 12:48 at about 17:40. The 16:48 was the latest we found, reaching Tenby at about 21:40, so a late start from London does not work on this route.
Changing at Bridgend instead of Neath took almost exactly as long, about 4h50, and added departures at 06:48 and 09:48. The 06:48 reaches Tenby at about 11:40, a gentler start than the 05:23 that still arrives before lunch; the Bridgend pattern also ran at 12:48 and 16:48, alongside the Neath connections at those times.
Other combinations, changing at Port Talbot Parkway or Cardiff Central, took between about 5h05 and 5h20, and those involving Bath Spa, Gloucester or Bristol Temple Meads ran to six hours or more. None of them saves any time over the Neath change, and two of them involve three changes on the way to Tenby rather than one.
Driving the 237 miles via the M4 takes about 4h25, only around 25 minutes less than the Neath connection.
At Tenby, the station is about 650 metres from Tudor Square, roughly ten minutes on foot.
